One nation one election pass or not ?

New Delhi: On Tuesday evening in the Lok Sabha ongoing winter session the NDA government had pushed the proposal for “ONE NATION ONE ELECTION(ONON)” bill aimed to conducted the simultaneous elections for the lower house of parliament and state assemblies together concurrently or within a set timeframe. The bill was introduced by Union Law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal which was approved by prime minister Narendra Modi on December 12th in the cabinet meeting.

Why One nation one election

Lok Sabha election is held every 5 years to elected the cabinet chairperson and member of parliament. Which is Similar to state Legislative assemblies’ election.  Somewhere in India every year election has been conducted for State assembly due to different term period. So high-level committee was crafted by former president Ram Nath Kovind, they have recommended the two phases election. First phase included election conduct for Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly together, where second phase election within 100 days of the first phase election panchayats and municipalities election should be held. Along with this committee had proposed 15 amendments to the Constitution were been drafted.

One nation one election benefits

By implementing these phase election cost of conducting multiple election can be reduced and enhancing the stable governance without any interruptions. But this can also challenge the federalism in India by favoring the nationalized parties by marginalizing regional parties and their ideologies which will reduce the diversity in politics and confuse the less informed or first-voters.

One nation one election Proposal

ONE NATION ONE ELECTION was the BJP’s promise for the 2024 Lok Sabha election which is included in the BJP’s manifesto. This was approved by Cabinet chairperson Narendra Modi. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the constitution bill “ONE NATION ONE ELECTION(ONON)” (one hundred and twenty-ninth amendment) by quoting Dr BR Ambedkar: “Federalism is that division of legislative and executive powers between centre and state is not done by any law made by centre but by constitution itself” and ‘Basic structure’ will not be changed. Voting took place in the Lok Sabha for billing approval through electronic machines first time even by member of parliaments with 304 of majority required total of 461 votes. Where NDA government secured 269 votes in favour and 198 against the bill by opposition. Now BJP government with NDA still need support from non-aligned parties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi required at least nine more vote for his dream to ONE NATION ONE ELECTION to come true. Law Minister requested the speaker of the parliament Om Birla to refer for joint Committee of parliament for consultation. This means the BJP will lead the committee because they maximum members of MPs. Meanwhile BJP’s 20 MPs didn’t attend the parliament voting poll for the bill.
