How to make Wheat Payasam at Home

A delicious and nutritious dessert from South India is wheat payasam. In Tamil, it is also known as Godhumai Payasam. Ghee, coconut milk, jaggery, and broken wheat are used to make this treat. It is frequently prepared for festivals and important occasions like Tamil New Year, Pongal, and birthdays.

Needed Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of broken wheat
  • 3 and half cups of water
  • 3/4 cup of jaggery
  • 1 cup of first coconut milk
  • 3/4 cup of second coconut milk
  • 1 cup of third coconut milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cardamom powder
  • some ghee roasted nuts and dry fruits

Step by step to make wheat Payasam

Step 1: Cook the Broken Wheat

  • Wash the broken wheat for 2 to 3 times
  • take a pressure cooker put the broken wheat in the cooker add 3 and half cup of water and pressure cook for 2 whistles
  • Check it be fully cooked and soft

Step 2: Make Jaggery Syrup

  • In a pan add jaggery and 1/2 cup of water and heat it until the jaggery melts completely
  • once it melted completely strain it with filter to remove dust and dirt

Step 3: Mix Cooked Broken Wheat and Jaggery syrup

  • In another pan add cooked broken wheat and jaggery syrup and cook until it becomes thicken (like kasari texture)

Step 4: Add Coconut milk

  • Once the mixture become thicken add third coconut milk mix well and cook until it become half
  • then add second coconut milk mix well and cook for 2 to 3 minutes
  • Add first coconut milk mix well and cook for 1 minute and off the stove

Step 5 : Add Flavor and Garnish

  • Add cardamom powder and ghee roasted nuts and dry fruits to the payasam and mix it well
  • And your homemade yummy wheat payasam is ready to serve and enjoy
