Unknown Carrom World Cup 2024

The 17-year-old Khazima, a first-year student of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College in Chennai, has defeated Rashmi Kumari, a 12-time national and multiple World Cup winner, with a thrilling win 25-23, 22-25, 25-24 in the final of the International Carrom tournament for the women’s crown.

The 6th Carrom World Cup, held at the India Community Centre in Milpitas, California organized by the United States Carrom Association (USCA) and sanctioned by the International Carrom Federation (ICF), with 175 players from 17 countries, from November 11 to 16, 2024.  It was a triple crown for both Srinivas Kormaravelli and Khazima (18), as they not only won the singles but also, the doubles and the team championships. Srinivas Komaravelli won the Men’s World Championship with a second title in style with a stunning white slam.

Srinivas won the doubles title with Mohammed Arif. Mithra (17) and Nagajothi (26), who won the doubles championship.

The Women’s Singles final was a hard-fought contest, where the 18-year-old M Khazima kept her nerves to defeat Rashmi Kumari from Bihar. From this victory she became the youngest world champion.

Khazima stated that “I have great respect for Rashmi. I practiced 12 hours a day to prepare for this World Cup. My father, Mehboob Basha, and former world champion Maria Irudayam have guided me to participate in the World Carrom Cup. She is the daughter of an auto driver from Kasimedu. She has been training for this world championship at the Cherian Nagar Carrom coaching centre with 45 members. She is a national and state champion in sub-junior categories.

Tamilnadu carrom team women M Khazima (18) received Rs 1 crore from the state government as the youngest world champion, who competed in doubles and team events. Also Mithra and Nagajothi, who have won the doubles and team events, received Rs 50 lakh each from Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin which is conducted by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).

Also, I mentioned that my brother, Abdul Rahman (26), a junior national champion, quit playing due to our financial condition. We live in a rented house, and my father’s club is also in a rented space.”

She told us that the government has promised to improve the club and revealed that she has a dream of buying a house with that money.

Mithra learned carrom when she was in Class 5.  Her father also drives an auto rickshaw. She said her father bought her a carrom board where none of the neighbors know how to play in her area included her. She expressed her dream of buying a house and supporting other players. Naga jothi was part of the winning team in the Asian Cup. She selected through the sports quota now works as an income Tax inspector.
